With no intention of dodging the bullet, he had flung himself forward, as the gunshot rang out.
“Changmin!”
It was too late when Yunho leapt after him.
Shiwon’s grip held firm as the pistol returned to hold fast upon its target.
“Stop this right now!” Yunho shouted, his eyes trained upon the fingers in the trigger guard.
“You still do care so much about Jaejoong don’t you?” Shiwon glared. “Tell me now, is it Jaejoong or Heechul, and you can only pick one.”
“This isn’t like you at all, Shiwon, you’ve never pointed a gun at an innocent man, let alone shot anyone who isn’t of threat at all—
“JUST TELL ME NOW DAMNIT!”
“My answer…is neither.”
At that moment, Changmin gave a loud moan of pain, and in a hurry, Jaejoong had rushed over to the injured boy’s side.
Distracted, Shiwon’s eyes flickered at the sudden movement.
With a swift move, Yunho dropkicked the pistol out of Shiwon’s outstretched hands; it skidded out of sight, striking the feet of another man hidden in the shadows.
“Damn you, Jung Yunho,” with both wrists twisted behind his back like a nabbed thief, and caught in Yunho’s fast grip, Shiwon struggled to unlock the hold, “don’t make me hurt you!”
Yoochun returned to the room with a long manila hemp. Throwing the ropes in Shiwon’s face, he retorted, “Hurt Yunho and we’ll have to resort to tying you up.”
“Fuck off Park Yoochun.” Shiwon thrashed about. Upon discovering that Yunho’s grip was much stronger than expected, he merely spat, only to gather furious glares from both Junsu and Yoochun, who looked ready to lash out full-force.
“Watch it.” Yunho’s warning seemed to apply to all 3 parties locked in a staring battle. “If you want me to let go of you, I hope you’re bright enough not to attempt an escape.” He pushed Shiwon to a sitting position on the wooden crate.
“Don’t expect me to thank you.” Shiwon wiped his freed palms against his trousers.
“Never expecting that. Now tell me, what is going on.”
~*~*~*~*~*~
Jaejoong had rushed to Changmin’s side frantically, cradling the unconscious boy’s head as gently as possible. “Baby please be okay, can you hear me?” He pats the cold cheeks lightly. “Changmin, please say something if you can hear hyung!”
“He’ll be okay,” Junsu was by their side checking the youngest boy for signs of injuries, and assured his frantic hyung, “the gunshot had grazed his arm, making nothing more than an abrasion. He hit his head against the crate which must have knocked him out.”
Jaejoong ripped a sleeve off his own T-shirt as means of bandaging the bleeding gash on Changmin’s arm. The bullet had, thankfully, not been too injurious. Softly, he planted a kiss upon the boy’s forehead.

“This isn’t betrayal, but an act of self-preservation.” Shiwon looked away.
“Selfishness,” Yunho corrected, “and I’ve just been too stupid not to have noticed. What do you have against Jaejoong anyway?”
“Are you too smitten by that whore to notice anything else?”
Violently, he grabbed Shiwon’s collar and dragged him to his feet. “Who’re you calling a whore?”
He gestured to Jaejoong, who had Changmin cradled in his lap. “Him.”
“How dare you!” He raised a bunched fist in Shiwon’s face.
“Go on, hit me.” When Yunho hesitated, Shiwon shoved him by his shoulders.
Yunho stumbled back but instead of hitting out, he dropped both hands back down to his sides. Inhaling deeply, he continued.
“I never hurt any friend of mine, ever. If you still regard me as your comrade, you’ll tell me.”
Everyone kept silent, as if Yunho’s words had struck a deep chord in their hearts.
“I…well.” Shiwon looked away, the bitterness in his voice had faded, “Because of Heechul…Heechul likes you with all his heart. I’m doing this for him because…” he looks down and takes a deep breath, “honestly? I’ve liked Heechul for ages. Years in fact.”
Whilst the others had shocked expressions, Yunho’s reflected calmness. “Go on.”
“I know that whor— Jaejoong, I know he means a lot to you in your heart, no matter how you deny it. Heechul knows it too and it hurts him to be overtaken by a mere memory of what used-to-be a relationship between you and him.”
Jaejoong pretends to concentrate on keeping Changmin warm, but he was listening with great intent. The younger boy in his arms had begun to show signs of stirring and recovery, much to his relief.
“Let me get this right. You want to kill Jae because you love the guy who’s in love with Yunho who’s in love with Jae? What does that make you, a substitute?” Yoochun blathered, throwing his arms into the air in disbelief.
“I’ll gladly be, for Heechul.”
“Does he know this?” Yunho spoke, to which the other boy shook his head in response.
“That’s what I think. Even if Heechul does know of my feelings for him, he makes no obvious acknowledgement.”
To everyone’s surprise, Yunho took a seat on the crate and seized Shiwon in a brotherly huddle.
“You’re still the same old Shiwon. I knew you weren’t planning to really shoot Jaejoong, and that first shot was an accident. ”
“You knew?”
“Oh please, that look of fear when you held that gun gave you away, pal.”
With a small laugh, he huddled the shoulders of his chum.
Changmin gave another loud groan, this time, his eyes opened wide.
“Don’t move! Does it hurt a lot?!”
“I’m not…” he struggled to sit up, “hurting much.”
Wincing, he grabbed at his bandaged arm which seared with pain. Scanning his surroundings, he took in the situation before exclaiming, “Yunho-hyung you’ve got to get out of here now! This is a set-up, he knew you’d come and used me to lure you here!”
Then leaping up with his cell phone in his hand, Shiwon added, “This is no place to stay, I know a way out of here without going through the main door and we’ve got 10 minutes before your father gets back…
“Well done, Shiwon.” A loud and deep voice boomed from somewhere in the room.
~*~*~*~*~*~
“Just fucking hand over the pendant!” It was a command.
“That will be the last thing I do.”
With dozens of failed businesses on his hands, the Chemun Corporation now ran on deficit. The red pendant that rested upon his chest, out of sight, held everything Chemun needed right now: money. The key to the vault was embedded within the pendant.
“You stupid boy, do you know how much money is in that vault?”
“Of course I do, I took them out personally. 10 million won, I extracted every single cent…”
“Liar! I opened that vault and left it for you and your dead mother and have been keeping tabs on it. Nobody touched it since the key’s been handed over.”
“Smart. Even so, the key belongs to me, part of the memory my mother left behind, so respect that or else.”
Chemun puffed out another cloud of smoke. “Your mother was nothing but a fucking whore.”
Like a wound spring waiting to be released, he threw full-blown punches in the revolting man’s face. His men weren’t fast enough to block his attack, before they could react, Chemun had a bloodied broken nose.
“That 10 million won belongs to my mother who fucking stole from her own family out of blind love for you!”
Restraint, his arms were locked in a fast grip. Heavy punches landed on his stomach.
Yoochun and Junsu sprang forward.
Changmin could not stand aside in silence any longer. Breaking away from Jaejoong’s grip, he wrestled the men raining blows upon Yunho.
“Fucking let go of him!”His injured arm proved to be of no hindrance, as Changmin’s Taekwondo black belt was simply not just for show.
Before the men could get back on their feets, he reached over to Yunho and unclasped his necklace. In his other hand he held his own red pendant.
He dangled them before Chemun.
“We’re both your sons. But to you we’re nothing but trash.”
Then he dashed up the stairs of the warehouse landing at full speed.
“FOLLOW HIM!”
They ensued.
The other 5 boys had no idea what Changmin planned to do.
Panting as he reached the 4th and topmost level, he hurried to the windows overlooking the steady currents of the Sumida River that flows through Tokyo.
The rest caught up. With no time to waste, he unbolted the window panes, heaving himself up and out onto the window ledge.
Beneath his feet was the concrete tar-road pavement. In the distance, Sumida River flowed endlessly, encircling the bays of Tokyo.
“What are you doing, get back down, Min!” Jaejoong pleaded, held back by Junsu.
“Abeoji(father),” Changmin’s solemn tone caught everybody’s attention, “My whole life was a set-up wasn’t it? Yunho-hyung and I are nothing but pawns in your corrupt world.”
“Get back here, Min!”
Ignoring his boyfriend’s pleas, he continued, “It’s me or the pendants, though I know you’ll choose the pendants, Father.”
“If I do, then?”
“I’ll jump. It’s a pity I won’t die, but I’ll fulfil your desire of seeing me gone forever from your life. Just take it that I’m dead, and never, ever find me again. Nor my friends for that matter.”
“He’s not worth it Changmin.” Yunho took a step forward, “please, don’t do this. He doesn’t care at all.”
To their horror, Chemun grinned, twirling a cigarette between his fingers.
“Between money and my son, I choose money.”
He’d known this would happen. “Then promise you’ll never harm me or my friends ever again.” He scooted closer to the edge of the ledge.
“No!” Jaejoong flung forward, climbing the ledge as quickly as his legs would take him.
“Jae—
He looked into Changmin’s eyes silently. I can lose anything but you.
Chemun’s men darted after Jaejoong, and so did the other 4 boys. The ledge was big enough for men bigger than the 2 boys now sitting on the edge.
Jaejoong grabbed the pendants from Changmin.
“You fucking want this don’t you?” he screamed at Chemun.
The men in black suits made a frenzied move to grab it from Jaejoong.
In a split second, Jaejoong turned towards the direction of the river, and threw the pendants out; they plonked into the river with a distinct rippling effect.
In the split-second chaos, Yunho had grabbed Changmin’s waist from behind, pulling him back to safe grounds from the window ledge.
Jaejoong had felt a shove from behind. He was falling through air. The next thing he felt was a sudden blunt impact to his back and head. His vision blurred, and then curtained in darkness.
